> Abstract

With a view to arousing students”¦ motivation to write, increasing their writing confidence and equipping them with the skills to write different text types at senior primary and secondary levels, P5 English teachers of HKTA Shun Yeung Primary School conducted a school-based action research project on writing, and infused a ”„Four-step Approach”¦ into their writing lessons. Graphic organisers were used to help students recognise text type features, and a variety of pre-writing activities were incorporated into the regular lessons to scaffold students writing progressively.

The post-test results indicated that students were more motivated to write and their writing abilities were improving gradually in terms of content, language and organisation. Teachers have also become more aware of the importance of introducing a wider variety of text types and analysing the complexity of text type features with greater depth at senior primary level, so as to prepare students for writing diverse text types at secondary level.
