Background

With the implementation of the NSSC drawing nearer, many teachers are preparing for the new curriculum by designing school-based materials for the elective modules. In this school, a group of teachers worked together to design a module on "Learning English through Popular Culture". The theme of the module was "Heroes and Villains".

 

Objectives

  • To help students understand the concept of popular culture
  • To introduce students to a wide variety of popular culture texts, help them understand the features of these texts and produce their own versions
  • To prepare students for School-based Assessment (SBA) by practising speaking activities related to print and non-print texts
  • To help students understand the assessment criteria through the practice of peer evaluation

Part 1: Defining Popular Culture

  • Students define the word “popular” by giving examples
  • They categorise pictures of “popular” and “classic” culture
  • They do a survey of pop culture preferences in their class or school
  • They write a brief definition of popular culture in Hong Kong

Part 2: Introducing heroes and villains

  • Students categorise photos of famous people. These can be categorized in different ways, eg good vs bad, male vs female, real vs fictional, dead vs alive etc. They may also match them in pairs, or identify those who don't fall into the main categories.

  • The teacher draws out the concept of heroes and villains, real and fictitious and teaches these words. Teachers may also discuss the fact that it is easier to categorise fictional characters as good or bad than it is real people.
  • Students identify those heroes and villains who come from comic books and movies.
  • They read an article about superheroes and identify commonalities in their stories

Part 3: Comic strips

  • Students learn about the features of comic strips

  • They create a comic strip featuring the hero they created. They may work in groups, pairs or individually.

Part 4: Superhero movie discussion

  • Students watch “Spiderman” and do worksheets/discussions focused on characters, plot etc.

  • The teacher uses PowerPoint to review characters and plot in “The Incredibles”

Part 5: Real life heroes and villains

  • Students discuss what makes someone a real life hero or villain, using examples from the photos used before, or choosing to talk about someone they admire.
  • They watch an interview with Li Lai Shan and read an article about her. They answer questions on the content, organization and language structures of the article and interview.

  • They choose a real life hero, heroine or villain and write a short biography of the person. (The choice of person may be based on the reading of a  non-fiction text)

  • They choose a famous person in whom they are interested or whom they have read about and prepare and give a presentation about that person.

Part 6: Advertising and movie trailers

  • The teacher introduces the topic of advertising by using pictures of famous people advertising products

  • Students read about advertising techniques and view some ads to identify the techniques used.

  • Students analyse a movie trailer and the accompanying voice-over.

Part 7: Final task
07_a_Final Task Instructions.doc

  • Students write the outline for a movie of their own.  The topic may be about superheroes or about a real person who seems to them a hero or a villain.
  • Students prepare an outline of a story for a movie.

  • Students watch a clip from the movie “Spiderman” and observe how camera angles, music and sound effects are used to enhance the presentation of the film.

  • Students write a script for a scene or section of the movie outlined before. The best idea from each class will be selected by teachers, and students will film the scene for showing in the post exam period.
