Introduction : This DVD-ROM showcases the fruitful experiences of collaborating schools and the Task Force on Language Support. 21 sets of school-based learning and teaching materials at both primary and secondary levels are categorised into 4 areas: development of language proficiency, teaching of thinking and self-directed language learning, catering for learner diversity and using Putonghua to teach the Chinese subject.

     
 
Title: Strategies in Action: Sharing of School-based English Language Teaching Practices

Introduction : This DVD is a collection of snapshots of school-based practices implemented over the past five years by teachers from different schools in collaboration with officers from the Task Force on Language Support. These practices were developed in response to various language-related reforms and initiatives. The primary school examples focus on perennial issues in language teaching such as vocabulary building and the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The secondary examples show how teachers used multiple strategies to cope with the implementation of different new initiatives such as the Senior Secondary Curriculum and the Fine-tuning of the Medium of Instruction policy.

Introduction : This DVD-ROM contains 3 programmes that are produced by the Educational Television Unit of the Curriculum Resources Section. The selected programmes cover the experiences of the schools under the support of the Task Force on Language Support and are, therefore, chosen for teachers and schools’ reference. The Panorama of Language Education in Hong Kong presents from a holistic point of view the development in local language education in the past ten years and students’ language proficiency in the local context. This sheds light on our understanding of students’ performance and the key factors accounting for the changes. Building a Professional English Team focuses on how English teachers in a primary and a secondary school use different means to professionalise their English teams so as to enhance students’ reading and writing skills. It also examines how diversified and motivating activities, both inside and outside English classrooms, are designed to raise students’ learning effectiveness. Classrooms for Literary Chinese focuses on how primary and secondary school Chinese teachers equip themselves and their students to revitalise the learning and teaching of Literary Chinese. It also displays how a collaborative and sharing culture is built among teachers.

Introduction : The DVD aims to share school experiences in addressing issues related to the development of speaking skills at both primary and secondary levels such as improving speaking skills through holistic planning and formative assessment activities. It contains a range of school-based and network-based materials jointly developed by teachers and the Language Learning Support Section. Teachers can get useful ideas on how to design their curriculum at one level and across levels. There is also information on how schools can form networks to increase students’ exposure and confidence in speaking English.
     
 
Title: Reading Pals Programme: Helping Students to Become Better Readers

Introduction : The CD-ROM aims to provide materials for teachers to set up a reading pals programme in which older students are trained to use various reading strategies to help younger students read in a reading session. The CD-ROM includes training video and audio clips, lesson plans, teaching and learning materials for training sessions, and other preparation and evaluation tools such as letters to parents, booklets and questionnaires for tutors and tutees. Teachers can get useful ideas on how to plan, implement and evaluate a reading pals programme.
