Among the four language skills, teachers of the school feel that students are weakest in writing. Students generally lack ideas to write and fail to produce grammatically correct sentences. How to help students overcome these age-old problems has always been the key concern of Mung Yan teachers. Measures like providing students with a word list before they write any composition, showing them model essays to read, going through their common mistakes in class have been undertaken by individual teachers at different times. Yet, they didn’t seem to bring about any marked improvement in student writing.
After successfully applying for LLSS support, the teachers at Mung Yan Primary School decided to look into this issue again in order to develop a coherent approach and a set of strategies that could be used by all teachers consistently. With consensus built among the teachers on what approach to use, the team then applied the same strategies to improve the design of the writing tasks used at P.5 level.
