Effective literacy development helps students build up a strong language foundation, while lesson study helps teachers enhance their professional knowledge. Teachers of Tin Shui Wai Methodist College made use of lesson study to look into what they teach in reading lessons and how well they can do it with the aim of helping students become better readers and writers.
Through engaging in lesson study, teachers undertook a step-by-step approach in teaching reading – first in the identification of what reading skills to cover on paper, next with the experimentation of different pedagogies in classroom implementation, and lastly through discussion of what improvements to make and what knowledge to generate. Gaps were discovered as teachers put the plans into practice, insights were gained on how to improve the PIE cycle and a learning community was gradually developed with teachers becoming more collaborative and reflective as well as better equipped to do holistic planning of the reading curriculum.
