This collaborative action research project outlines the work done by the teachers of Bethel High School in creating a real purpose for their S1 students to learn English through a task-based learning approach by strategically integrating the formal and informal curricula. As students’ abilities in English varied between different classes, some strategies for catering for learner diversity were also adopted. Results indicated that:
students were able to gain a better understanding of the importance of English as an international language which enables them to communicate with foreigners from different countries and thus enhances their motivation in learning;
their confidence in speaking English and their collaborative skills have improved; and
the teachers have gained confidence and skills in making use of cooperative learning activities, task-based learning and differentiated instructions in their lessons.
