> Abstract

The teachers of Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School decided to take advantage of the unique nature of the different elective modules to bridge the gaps in their students’ learning and to better prepare them for the HKDSE examination and SBA.  Examples of strategies they employed in the implementation of the senior secondary S4 Short Stories Elective Module included ensuring easy access to fiction texts that were of interest to their students and set at an appropriate reading ability level, helping students develop skills to read independently and more extensively, and making use of formative assessment to develop students' ownership in their learning.  At the end of this project, the students were not only able to show an improvement in their interest and motivation to read, but also enhanced confidence in performing SBA-type speaking tasks.
