> Abstract

English teachers see the value of using real life issues in units for students to explore. They included in a task-based unit some real life issues such as obesity and having poor eating habits which are a common phenomenon among primary students. In doing so, they wanted to develop students' ability to make reflections and nurture their positive values and attitudes that enable them to live a more healthy life. Students conducted a mini-study on their own eating habits to obtain evidence. It was found that students were able to take an active role to explore real life issues with teachers' help, reflect on the data obtained and set goals for self improvement. Real life issues were also coherently integrated into a task-based unit for the first time in the school-based English curriculum. Teachers' confidence in using real life issues to make English learning more interesting and relevant to students' lives was enhanced.
