Aims of Activity : |
Through exploring how to look at student work (LASW) more effectively, we aim to develop the following curriculum leadership capabilities (CLC) among participants:• Using data effectively• Establishing monitoring and/or evaluation mechanisms to ensure quality learning and teaching• Demonstrating subject and pedagogical knowledge to bring about effective learning and teaching• Communicating effectively with different parties to foster a learning culture• Use personal strengths and uphold positive values and ethics |

Defining LASW |
LASW can serve both accountability and professional development purposes. It helps teachers gain a deeper understanding of student learning and inform teacher and curriculum development. |

How to plan and conduct the LASW exercise effectively - Part 1 |
• When looking at student work, teachers should develop a common understanding of what constitutes good student work. The understanding could be developed through setting clear standards, selecting development focuses and building progression into the school-based curriculum.• Curriculum leaders can look at whether the tasks designed fit the standards set, e.g. whether they are developed according to agreed common practices stated in different sources, such as- Panel Handbook- School-based English Language curriculum- Learning Progression Framework- Curriculum Guide• Curriculum leaders should consider what data to be given to other panel members to help them understand students' performance and make objective judgement.• A scrutiny cover sheet may help curriculum leaders collate all necessary information. |

How to plan and conduct the LASW exercise effectively - Part 2 |
• Conducting the LASW exercise is a way to practise the Evaluation-Planning-Implementation-Evaluation (EPIE) cycle.• A protocol can be practised to communicate ideas with different parties in LASW meetings more effectively.• When teachers look at student work, they should look at whether students can demonstrate the expected learning outcomes by comparing their performance with the stated learning objectives. They should also identify students' strengths and weaknesses and modify the task(s) where necessary.• Constructive feedback from teachers is important in helping students make improvement in their learning. |
