A whole school approach to maximising students' learning experiences

Optimisation of the senior secondary core subjects brings new opportunities for schools to review and refine their school-based curricula to equip students for future challenges and meet the diverse needs of students. Pui Tak Canossian College has adopted a whole school approach to holistically reviewing the school curriculum to create space for developing students' potentials and enriching their learning experiences. The School Leadership Team will share how the released lesson time and learning time was used to provide diversified options to cater for students' different interests, abilities and aspirations; how cross-curricular initiatives such as Language across the Curriculum have increased students' language exposure and enhanced their language and literacy development; and how teachers' professional capacity was strengthened to achieve the school goal.

The map of Chinese culture – from life to artistry

To enhance students' appreciation of Chinese culture and their cultural identity, build cultural confidence and raise language literacy among students, Kwun Tong Government Secondary School has incorporated a series of modules on "Exploring Chinese Culture"into their school-based curriculum for Secondary 4 to 6. Through adopting the "Cognition, Affection and Action" implementation strategy and integrating it with reading, presentations, discussion(s), field trips and hands-on experiential learning activities, students' learning experiences were enriched. It is expected that through systematic learning at different levels such as material, institutional and spiritual development, students will gain a deeper understanding of the excellent Chinese cultural traditions and be able to contribute to the inheritance and promotion of those traditions.

Creating coherent learning experiences for students through meaningful curriculum integration

Effective integration of the Compulsory and Elective Parts and relevant Major Renewed Emphases into the school-based language curricula can not only reduce curriculum overload, but also provide students with more coherent learning experiences. English teachers of Kau Yan College have revamped their Secondary 4 writing curriculum by integrating elements in the elective module of Learning English through Poems and Songs into the Compulsory Part to provide students with opportunities for academic and creative use of English. e-Learning activities were incorporated to engage students in multisensory and self-paced learning; and self-directed learning strategies were introduced to help students develop learner autonomy through setting goals, evaluating, monitoring and regulating their own learning.

Oral history – A comprehensive manifestation of language literacy

Premising on the time released and the curriculum flexibility afforded by the optimisation of the senior secondary core subjects, St. Peter's Secondary School has transformed its anniversary celebration events into learning and teaching activities with more profound meaning. Chinese teachers have introduced a new learning module named "Oral History" at Secondary 4 with a view to helping students stay focused on present, learn from history and look forward to the future. Through the interview report writing task, students contacted people who worked hard for the school in the past, explored their present identity as a student, and reflected on how they could make contributions to the community and the country so as to achieve the passing on of the school heritage. Students' active participation in the learning activities have fostered a balanced development of language and thinking skills and nurtured positive values among them.

Learning beyond designated curriculum contents and lesson time

How can all students benefit from broadened curriculum choices and extended learning time? Pui Ching Middle School used the flexibility arising from the optimisation of the four core subjects to introduce a number of new courses called "Journey for Knowledge" for students to choose at senior secondary level so that they could embark on other pursuits of interest to them. For English Language, self-directed learning projects were implemented at different levels to motivate students to read and provide them with opportunities to connect their learning in English lessons to their real life experiences or learning in content subjects. While the Secondary 4 project focused on flipped learning of reading strategies to extend students' learning outside class time, the junior secondary level projects aimed to enhance interface with the senior secondary curriculum.
