Background information
The value of reading English newspapers and magazine articles has long been recognised by teachers and students alike.  They are not only excellent resources for improving students’ language skills, but also an easily accessible means for students to extend their knowledge and deepen their understanding of current issues.

With the introduction of Learning English through Social Issues elective module in the NSS English Language curriculum at Ho Lap College (Sponsored by the Sik Sik Yuen), their students’ capability in seeking information from and reading English news and magazine articles critically have become even more essential than before.  While the teachers have confidence that the majority of their students are capable of handling these texts independently at the senior secondary level, they saw a need to provide additional support for their weaker students by helping them to start getting acquainted with English newspapers and magazines as a resource for improving their English knowledge and skills in general, as well as building a broader knowledge base and critical reading skills so as to lay a strong foundation for the NSS Social Issues elective module.
