Topic Enhancing literacy through the effective teaching of sight words
Level P3-P4
Objectives
To improve students’ literacy in terms of reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension ability
To supplement the teaching of traditional phonics programmes
Design of the project
Teachers of Cheung Chau Sacred Heart School wanted to work on literacy development by enhancing students’ vocabulary building skills. They worked together to identify different vocabulary skills evident in textbook units and readers and to include them in the teaching plans. In addition, P3 students were taught sight words systematically in every lesson. Teachers decided to first teach the pre-primer, primer and the 1st level of the Dolch word list.
Teachers taught sight words explicitly to P3 students (pre-primer list, primer list and 1st level list were taught in P3 while 2nd level and 3rd level lists were taught one year later when the students went up to P4).
A teaching kit consisting of a suggested teaching schedule, a full set of teaching PowerPoints and flashcards for classroom teaching, a student self learning booklet, peer assignment papers and teacher assessment papers were provided.
