> Abstract

SKH Chan Young Secondary School promoted questioning and feedback techniques as the school development focus. The S2 English teachers therefore collaborated with LLSS officer to investigate how to use good questioning and feedback techniques in developing students’ thinking and speaking skills, and preparing them for school-based assessment.

The unit involved film watching, discussion, writing a film review and oral presentations. It was found that students were able to discuss higher-level questions, which in turn facilitated their oral presentations, in terms of both content and speaking skills. The use of provoking questions stimulated students’ ideas and enhanced students’ thinking skills. The whole process also required students to reflect on their writing and speaking performance with feedback from the teacher and peers. Teachers’ awareness of using questioning and feedback techniques also increased through co-planning, lesson observation and discussion.
