> Abstract

Instead of seeing P6 TSA as the destination of the primary education journey for all primary students, teachers of Baptist (Shatin Wai) Lui Ming Choi Primary School are aware that some students can actually achieve more and that the curriculum can and should be a lot broader and deeper than simply preparing students to meet the basic competencies.

This school case was about a trial unit which aimed at stretching the potential of higher ability students.  To address the needs of the higher ability students, the P6 English teachers decided to remove the learning ceiling by adding in the Three Key Elements of Gifted Education – (1) higher-order thinking skills development, (2) creativity development and (3) personal-social competence development.

The experience of planning and implementing this unit gave the teachers involved in the project insights into the direction of curriculum design for the school in the future.  These teachers realised that setting high expectations for all students and introducing the three gifted elements to all students did not benefit only the gifted ones but also the average and the lower ability groups.
