Findings

Analysis and evidence

Students became more interested in writing.

Most students felt more interested in writing in English. Before the project, they had a mean of 2.62 (4-point scale). After the project, there was an increase (mean = 2.83). They participated enthusiastically in the pre-tasks. (Clips 12)

Students showed progress in various aspects in writing.

In the first writing task, students were able to generate more ideas and use vocabulary and language structures more accurately. In the second writing task, they improved on organisation of ideas and got more creative ideas. (Sample students' work)

Students enhanced their skills in correcting their work and others' work and they had more positive attitude towards evaluating others' work. Students collaborated well with others and were serious about their role and the task assigned to them. They were confident enough to give feedback to others and seek for clarifications if necessary. Using data progressively helped teachers make sense of students' needs and take appropriate actions. Teachers found it useful to take into account various types of data to ensure they could truly address students' needs. Their planning could also become more systematic and comprehensive. They also stated that they had grown professionally after the action research. They were able to reflect upon their experiences, identify areas for improvement and take appropriate measures.
