What happened

Planning

Analysing needs

With guidance from teachers, students recorded their intentions regarding improvement and their immediate goals for learning. They were encouraged to make the goals achievable and specific.
Completed samples of the portfolio were provided for guidance. Teachers also gave comments on the students' goals.

Choosing resources

Teachers provided lists of materials for reading / viewing under the main themes of health, technology and entertainment. Students could choose from these lists or choose other materials on the same themes.

Implementing

Keeping records

Students kept a learning portfolio, including a summary of the content and their reflections on the texts they read or viewed, together with some vocabulary items chosen from the text.
Teachers introduced the portfolio using some worked examples.

Monitoring

Students completed an entry in their portfolios for each text they read or viewed. Teachers responded with comments on their reflections.

Evaluating learning and progress

Students did self-evaluation at the end of the project. Some also shared their self-reflection in class
As a practice assessment task, students gave an individual presentation, either on a text or topic they had studied, or on their reflections on their learning in the project. Peer assessment was conducted during the presentation task.
