The Language Learning Support Section held the first of its two Annual Sharing events on 28 March 2025, bringing together over 250 education professionals to explore innovative approaches in English Language education. The event featured a thought-provoking keynote session followed by ten parallel sharing sessions, showcasing exemplary practices from schools across Hong Kong.
This professional development gathering highlighted how primary and secondary schools receiving support services have successfully integrated a range of curriculum initiatives into their English Language curriculum.
The keynote address, delivered by Professor Ben MOORHOUSE from City University of Hong Kong, focused on 'AI for Good: Nurturing critical and positive uses of GenAI in language learning'. Professor MOORHOUSE captivated the audience with his insightful analysis of how generative AI should be approached to foster deeper student engagement. His presentation struck a perfect balance between theoretical foundations and practical classroom applications, inspiring attendees to reconsider their pedagogical approaches within the rapidly evolving educational landscape.
Through the wide-ranging parallel sessions, participating schools demonstrated their substantial professional expertise gained from strategic planning and implementation of these initiatives, under the support of the officers from the Section. Attendees witnessed firsthand accounts of improvements in both teacher professional development and student learning outcomes, with curriculum leaders sharing how they enhanced their capacity to drive effective curriculum planning and foster innovation.
The event specifically showcased effective curriculum practices that demonstrated how schools:
1. |
integrated curriculum initiatives (e.g. values education) and new educational trends (e.g. use of new technologies like generative artificial intelligence) into the school English Language curriculum to increase students' motivation and engagement in English learning; and |
2. |
enhanced students' English language learning engagement through diversified learning experiences both within and beyond the classroom. |
This dynamic platform for professional exchange fostered valuable cross-school collaboration and inspired participants to implement similar innovative approaches in their own educational contexts.
