> Abstract

To prepare students for the new senior secondary curriculum and tertiary education, teachers of SMKMCF Ma Ko Pan Memorial College think that it is important to build a solid foundation for students at junior levels. To support students at junior secondary levels to have a better transition, teachers of this school designed an LAC Period Programme and LAC Days to increase students’ exposure to English and learn content subjects through English inside and outside the classroom activities.

During the LAC Periods, teachers introduced subject specific vocabulary and common knowledge structures used in different subjects to develop students’ academic literacy. On the LAC Days, students took part in a variety of motivating activities with the aim of developing their interest and knowledge in learning content subjects through English. With the integration of the formal and informal curricula, students were provided with a language-rich environment to learn content subjects through English in a progressive and effective manner.
