Topic:
Preparing students for a smooth transition from junior to senior levels: Implementation of LAC Periods and LAC Days

Purpose of the project:
To facilitate students for a better transition from P6 to S1 and from S3 to S4 through developing their academic literacy

Objectives to be achieved:
School level:

  • to integrate the formal and informal curricula to widen students’ language exposure in content subjects

Teacher level:

  • to equip language teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to use subject-specific materials to develop students’ language and thinking skills
  • to foster inter-departmental collaboration through organising cross-curricular activities

Student level:

  • to enhance students’ exposure to English inside and outside classroom at junior secondary levels
  • to develop students’ academic literacy in different KLAs

Design of the project:

LAC Periods

Aim

  • to widen students’ language exposure in content subjects
  • to support students to use English better when they study content subjects in junior and senior forms

Target level

S1 & S3 students

Programme design

It is an extension of the summer bridging programme. An LAC period per cycle is arranged in the timetable to equip students with language skills in academic subjects in normal lessons.

Aim

  • to increase students’ language exposure in content subjects outside
    classroom

S1 & S2 students

Programme design

It is an extension of the LAC periods outside classroom. Some cross-curricular activities of different KLAs were organised during lunch time as a platform to increase and widen students’ language exposure in content subjects.

Parties involved & roles

English teachers

  • giving advice on the language elements to be included in the content

Content subject teachers

  • proposing the topic and content to be included in the programme
  • taking the lead to guide student helpers to design some interesting games & activities for the programme

Student helpers

  • designing relevant materials for the games & activities after school or during class time as a class project
  • taking care of the booths and guiding students to participate in the games & activities
