Nurturing positive values and attitudes in students has long been one of the Four Key Tasks in our school curriculum and it can be done through the learning of various subjects and diverse learning experience. However, even though positive values and attitudes are addressed in the school-based English Language curricula of many schools, this may not be done systematically and the approaches adopted, as well as the emphasis placed, on this focus usually vary among teachers.
A team of English curriculum leaders of Li Sing Primary School worked closely with the Language Support Officer of the Language Learning Support Section to put the suggestions made on approaches and strategies to foster positive values among students in the Basic Education Curriculum Guide (P1 – P6) (2014) into practice. In this project, teachers integrated elements of values education into their school-based English Language curriculum with the aim of making their students’ learning in the target language knowledge and skills and their development of positive values complementary to each other. Their efforts made in this project have successfully made the values education components an integral part of their school-based English Language curriculum at Key Stage 2. Student performance at the different stages of their learning indicated that their sensitivity towards the positive values embedded in the life events selected in the lessons has enhanced. They were also able to make use of the target values to comprehend, discern and judge issues, and even apply the target values in their daily lives. Teachers’ experience in this project can provide some insights for schools that are at their initial stage of integrating values education into their English Language curriculum.
