Life planning is an ongoing and lifelong process of personal fulfilment. Educational experiences that are designed to promote career-related attitudes and knowledge about oneself and the realities of the world of work are vital at the primary and secondary levels (Herr & Cramer, 1992; Zunker, 1997). In order to help students make early planning for their studies, the school started infusing elements of life planning and careers education into the junior secondary English Language curriculum with emphasis on developing students’ personality, interest, skills and values that can influence their motivation to learn.
To enhance students’ motivation to learn and to widen their exposure to the world of work, a range of life-wide learning activities, e.g. visits to the airport, tourist spots and restaurants, were organised for S1-3 students. Simulated work-related activities and post-task reflection were conducted to increase students’ self-understanding and awareness of the knowledge, skills and values and attitudes needed for the workplace. For instance, students were asked to take food orders as a waiter or waitress, introduce places as a tour guide and serve passengers as a flight attendant.
