Teacher: Ms Elaine Chung

Information about expertise: Ms Elaine Chung serves as the English Panel Chairperson at The Church of Christ in China Kei Tsz Primary School. She has adeptly led the planning and implementation of Reading across the Curriculum programs at Key Stage 2. Her leadership fosters collaboration among teachers from various subject departments including General Studies, Information and Communication Technology, and Life Education. This collaboration aims to boost student engagement with non-fiction texts, enhance reading skills, and foster positive values and attitudes.

During the 2023/24 school year, Ms Chung was seconded to the Language Learning Support (LLS) Section, Education Bureau. She worked closely with supported schools to integrate curriculum initiatives such as values education and Reading across the Curriculum into their school English Language curriculum. Additionally, she represented Hong Kong teachers in the Hong Kong Teacher's Exchange Activities to the Mainland, co-organised by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Department of Education of Guangdong, and the Education Bureau. Here, she collaborated with the Faculty of English at Shantou Jinyang Elementary School (汕头市龙湖区金阳小学), engaging in professional development activities that enhanced teacher growth in both regions.

Ms Chung also shared her experiences in curriculum leadership at various meetings within the Curriculum Leadership Development Programme and Learning Communities for English Language Teachers organised by the LLS Section, offering valuable insights as a seasoned curriculum leader.

Information about expertise: Ms Nicole Wang is the English Panel Chairperson at Ta Ku Ling Ling Ying Public School, where she has led the implementation of Reading across the Curriculum programmes over the years. Her leadership has empowered her team to effectively use diverse school-based resources, fostering authentic learning environments and providing meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students.

During the 2023/24 school year, Ms Wang was seconded to the Language Learning Support (LLS) Section. In this capacity, she worked collaboratively with various schools to integrate key curriculum initiatives, such as values education, into their English Language curriculum. Her role extended beyond local schools as she represented Hong Kong in the Teacher's Exchange Activities to the Mainland, co-organised by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Department of Education of Guangdong, and the Education Bureau. Stationed at Shantou Danxia Primary School (汕头市龙湖区丹霞小学), she engaged in professional development activities to share good practices and enhance collaboration with Mainland educators.

During her secondment, Ms Wang also contributed her insights into curriculum leadership through the Curriculum Leadership Development Programme and Learning Communities for English Language Teachers organised by LLS Section. Her involvement in these networking platforms underscored her commitment to advancing educational excellence.

Information about expertise:  Ms Eva Yau, Vice-Principal of Fanling Public School, possesses expertise in holistic curriculum planning, Reading across the Curriculum (RaC) and catering for learner diversity. She has led her team to conduct systematic curriculum planning across levels based on the Learning Progression Framework. She has also employed a variety of strategies such as setting differentiated learning goals and expected outcomes, and using flipped learning, e-learning, experiential learning and multimodal texts in task-based units and RaC projects at different levels to cater for students’ diverse needs, interests and language abilities. Through collaborating with teachers of other content subjects including General Studies, Mathematics and Visual Arts teachers to promote RaC, she has created an array of engaging and meaningful English learning activities for students to achieve whole-person development.

They infused STEM elements into modular design to ignite students' sense of wonder by asking them to design a product using the closed circuit to solve some problems. The project was initiated by the English Language subject and extended to cross-disciplinary collaboration with General Studies, Visual Arts, teacher-librarian and the Information Technology teams.

Students were encouraged to produce and publish multimodal texts. The English Subject also provided support in promoting STEM education in the school by incorporating the aquaponics system (a school facility) into an S2 unit on 'Going Green' to develop students' presentation skills in preparing them for STEM-related competitions.

They also trained some of the S2 students as tutors to coach P6 students of a neighbouring primary school to read non-fiction readers in a cross-key stage RaC buddy reading programme. Through this programme, the S2 student tutors improved their coaching skills, as well as their self-monitoring and self-management skills.
