Information about expertise:  Ms Crystal Zheng, English Panel Chairperson of Kau Yan College, led her team to revamp the English Language subject with space created by lesson reduction in the optimisation of the senior secondary core subjects. Students were provided with opportunities for academic and creative use of English with the infusion of the elective module Learning English through Poems and Songs into the compulsory part whilst practicing e-learning and self-directed learning. In the process, they also developed student autonomy through setting goals, evaluating, monitoring and regulating their own learning.

Information about expertise:  Ms Candice Ngai, English Panel Chairperson of Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) Primary School, is experienced in incorporating self-directed learning into the school-based curriculum and providing opportunities for students to apply what they have learnt in meaningful contexts both within and outside class time.

She and her team focused on enriching their P3 students’ vocabulary through explicit teaching of various self-directed vocabulary learning strategies. At the end of the school year, they organised the Vocabulary Challenge, an English co-curricular activity, for the students to review and apply the target vocabulary and self-directed vocabulary learning skills in an enjoyable way.

Information about expertise:   Ms Celia Cheung, English Panel Head of St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School, has been making effective use of an array of e-learning tools and/or resources to increase students’ self-directed learning (SDL) capabilities. SDL cycle components such as goal setting, using appropriate resources, and self-monitoring learning progress have been incorporated into unit planning and material design to develop students’ readiness to learn independently. To enhance students’ ability to use appropriate resources for learning, e-learning tools such as Flipgrid were introduced. Through creating their own presentation videos, students’ self-confidence and skills in speaking English were improved.

Information about expertise:  Mr Alex Li, English Panel Head of Pui Ching Middle School, developed students’ self-directed learning capabilities and built up their effective learning habits by giving them more autonomy in learning. Self-directed learning (SDL) projects and flipped learning tasks were implemented in S1-4 to extend learning time to outside the lessons. The SDL projects motivated students to read and provided them with opportunities to connect their learning in English lessons to their real-life experiences, future study and career and instilled in them positive values and attitudes, fostering their whole-person development.

Specific features include:

  • using authentic fiction and non-fiction texts to promote values education;

  • designing meaningful and creative tasks to nurture students' self-directed learning capabilities including setting learning goals and evaluating learning outcomes;

  • adopting diversified assessment modes including self-assessment, peer assessment and e-assessment;

  • infusing life-wide learning through different parent-child activities; and

  • adopting a blended learning approach in response to the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Through designing a self-directed vocabulary learning portfolio for students to practise the target vocabulary building strategies, using a variety of modes to assess students' learning of vocabulary, and harnessing appropriate e-tools to maximise their learning time to develop vocabulary power, students have developed solid vocabulary building skills and motivation to learn vocabulary more independently.

Through a STREAM project collaborated among different subjects including English Language, Information and Communication Technology and Visual Arts, students learned and applied effective strategies to construct scientific knowledge, acquired generic skills such as creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills and developed positive values and attitudes which pave the way for their development into lifelong learners.

They also trained some of the S2 students as tutors to coach P6 students of a neighbouring primary school to read non-fiction readers in a cross-key stage RaC buddy reading programme. Through this programme, the S2 student tutors improved their coaching skills, as well as their self-monitoring and self-management skills.
