School Name :

Hong Kong True Light College

Project Name : Family Fun & Visit to Southern District
Number of Core Students  : 11
Project Descriptions :

Family Fun & Visit to Southern District trains students the ability of planning activities and enables them to be an independent leader. In addition, we hope to design a unique and new Southern District itinerary so as to let other people know more about Southern District, increasing the sense of belonging of our junior students. We even recruited six students to be our docents. Through the docent training, they can be able to present the spots of Southern District fluently and confidently as well as enhance their communication skills. Besides, we hope that we can train some Southern District Ambassadors through the activities so that this activity can be passed on in Southern District.

Students Workshop :

Our Learning Goals :

Student’s Learning :
  • Enhance the leadership and planning capacity
The project is led by the students and they are the leaders in different positions in order to learn the planning and problem solving skills.

  • Attain a creative result
The most significant feature of the project is to let the students take the initiative to learn, explore and solve problems as well as enhance students' creative thinking.

  • Realise the importance of cooperation
The participating students come from different backgrounds, which inevitably lead to conflicts. If they can tackle the conflict and have open discussion, this could enable the team to have a perfect solution.

  • Understand own strengths and weaknesses The project emphasizes reflection, peers and teachers' feedback so as to make students aware more of their own strengths and deficiencies as well as re-understand themselves and develop their specialties.

  • Change of learning mode
The project changes students’ learning mode from teacher-oriented to student-oriented. After the students become the main character, they are forced to face and handle problems. Undoubtedly this promotes and encourages students to learn independently, hence, raises the level of learning.

Teachers’ Learning :
  • Teachers become a facilitator or catalyst in the learning process.
The project is led by students while teachers instruct in a timely manner as well as providing assistance and feedback. Students could learn from mistakes and seek the truth so that these will consolidate learning.

  • Learn to trust students
The programme enables the teacher to understand the importance of timely let go and let students make decisions and solve problems so that students will be able to learn from mistakes and try to solve problems. Furthermore, giving students the sense of ownership of the plan could increase the trust between teachers and students and enhance the culture of school harmony.

  • Learn the importance of transfer
Present study does not only pursue knowledge and skills, but to enhance students' generic skills. Generic skills can enable knowledge and skills transfer to a different field of study. The programme focuses on transfer learning as students can transfer the ability they learnt from the plan to other subjects.

Our Reflection :

Project Teacher

Nurture leaders

“This project reaffirms the school that in order to let students become leaders, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive training system and platform to create opportunities for students to become a leader in a team.”

Develop a learning community, create a practical platform

“This scheme develops a learning community for schools, breaks the traditional mode of learning and changes the teacher-led study group to a student-led study group. This kind of learning mode can increase students’ participation and enthusiasm and enhance their learning motivation. Through discovering problems and discussing to find a solution, students’ knowledge and skills can be further consolidated, which directly enhance learning effectiveness.”

Reflect on the importance of learning

“This project enables schools to understand that reflection is a must in both learning and thinking stages. Reflection is a ‘learning process’ for summarising and recording learning experiences. Adding reflection part in the project can re-awaken students' learning objectives, so that their learning can yield twice the result with half the effort. Through this project, participating students can make reflection as a habit by adding it into day-to-day learning, which will help students’ have a new perspective and understanding of things.”

Core Members
Enable others to act “I think enabling others to act is the most important part because a plan could not be carried out by only one person. Therefore, team work is essential. Besides, team members have different expertise, leading and make good use of them enhance learning efficiency.”
Model the way

“As a forerunner of the LED project in the school, I led the team with my experience. I think a leading role could improve the group efficiency and enable team members to play their strengths in different positions.”

Encourage the heart

“Every event has its own difficulties. Whenever encounter some difficulties, team members may easily feel depressed. Apart from finding a solution, members’ support and encouragement are also important to make the team full of positive energy. Not just saying the shortcomings of the activity but also say something encouraging.”

Challenge the process

“Always challenge and ask different questions to myself can let me understand the inadequacies of the activity.”

Inspire a shared vision

“Any position needs a leader. A good leader could lead his team to achieve a common goal.”
