Risk management ·ÀIºÞ²z

Several regular first aids kits should always be available while conducting LWL activities.  These could serve well if an accident happens.  School colleagues should also be well informed about procedures to be taken whenever an accident occurs.  Unless teachers in charge have a knowledge of the venue where the activity will be held and has visited it recently, a preliminary visit should be made.  If colleagues participating in an activity could pay together a preliminary visit prior to the venue, precious opinions could be expressed after mutual discussions.  This would lead to better arrangement for the activities.

As good supports enhance the quality of work, it is essential for teachers to examine all resources in hand before conducting an activity.  Resources comprise financial resources and human resources.  Financial resources would be the focus in the following discussion.

First of all, teachers should check whether the budget of an activity is included in the estimate of the school account at the commencement of the school semester.  Meanwhile, teachers may inquire whether any fund could possibly be obtained from related departments for the activity.  It is a definite advantage for pupils if teachers could acquire any endowment from outside organizations.  Teachers may work with their school social workers or community centres for obtaining relevant information.  Schools with experience in conducting similar activities may also be consulted.

While planning an activity, teachers in charge should consider their pupils¡¦ features (such as learning needs, abilities, former knowledge and interests, etc.) as well as the learning targets in order to draw up the aim of the activity.  The content of the activity can then be determined accordingly.

Before conducting an activity, teachers in charge should address clearly to the various target groups related to the activity i.e. to convince the school authority that the activity is in line with the ideal of the school or with the school curriculum; to inform parents about the content of the activity and its benefit for their children; to let pupils know about the aims and the procedures of the activity; to announce the conducting of the activity to the police (if necessary), etc. These kinds of debriefings will promote the activity and enhance its effectiveness.
