Instructional Design - Procedural Account

Procedural Account (PA) Writing is to give accurately an account of a scientific activity including its aim, steps, and results or conclusion in order of the significant events.

1. Assessing students' performance prior to instruction.
(10 min)

  • Pre instruction task: students write an answer to a question requiring PA writing
    (This performance is to be compared with their post-instruction performance for assessing their learning.)

2. Introducing the genre PA
(20 min)

  • Task 1: (Group work) Students observe the teacher lighting up a Bunsen burner, then write a detailed account of the action.
  • Introduce PA as a genre often found in CE and DSE papers.

3. How to write a PA
(25 min)

a) Structure of PA

  • Examine the answers in Task 1 to preliminary identify the structure of a PA in students' own work
  • Task 2: Re-arrange the shuffled sentences of a PA passage

  • Examine a number of CE questions and try to identify in the sample answers the language features described in the PA notes:

4. Consolidating students' learning
(20 minutes)

  • Examine sample answers of candidates provided by HKEAA. Students will realize higher performing scripts do exhibit PA text structure and language features.
