Our Services

Our section's mission is to support schools to foster students' whole-person development through optimising their school language curricula and enriching their students' learning experiences. Examples of initiatives we have been helping our partner schools to incorporate into their curriculum include:

  • Fostering Learning/Language/Reading across the Curriculum (including in the context of supporting STEM/STEAM education)

  • Infusing values education (including national education, national security education and life education), Life Planning Education, media and information literacy and life-wide learning into the school English Language curriculum

  • Fostering self-directed learning through the promotion of e-learning, assessment as learning and meaningful homework

  • Catering for learning diversity

  • Strengthening the interface between key stages

  • Optimising the English Language curriculum to achieve balanced development of language and generic skills and knowledge of language (e.g. text grammar)


Our section offers different types of support services to both primary and secondary schools. Below is a summary of our support services.

Aims
  • Empowering teachers to strengthen holistic curriculum planning to optimise English language learning and teaching
  • Nurturing curriculum leadership in teachers
  • Enhancing teachers' leadership capabilities to improve subject management and sustain changes
  • Empowering curriculum leaders to respond to various curriculum initiatives and integrate them into the school curriculum
  • Empowering teachers to optimise their school English Language curriculum
  • Providing a platform for teachers to inquire into topics of common interest, both collectively and individually, share school-based experiences and resources, and network with other like-minded professionals
Modes of support
Supporting schools in implementing different foci of support through diversified support activities, which include the following in general:

 

  • regular on-site meetings (e.g. collaborative lesson planning, reviewing and optimising the school English Language curriculum)
  • lesson study/lesson observation and post-lesson discussion
  • school-based/inter-school professional development activities (e.g. workshops, sharing sessions, lesson observation)
Enhancing target teachers' curriculum leadership capabilities through diversified support activities, which include the following in general:

 

  • theme-based workshops
  • flipped learning
  • regular on-site support/meetings (e.g. collaborative lesson planning, intra-school lesson study/lesson observation and post-lesson discussion)
  • inter-school networking activities (e.g. inter-school lesson observation, sharing of school-based experience, inter-school visits)
Engaging participants in professional exchanges through diversified support activities, which include:

 

  • theme-based workshops
  • inter-school networking activities (e.g. inter-school lesson observation, inter-school visits, experience sharing)
  • 1 to 2 face-to-face/online meetings with language support officers (e.g. consultation, collaborative lesson planning)
Expectations on participating schools
  • Schedule regular collaborative lesson planning periods for collaboration with language support officers and arrange time for professional exchange activities such as peer lesson observation
  • Identify 2-3 teachers (e.g. preferably panel chair, vice-panel chair) to be developed into curriculum leaders
  • Schedule regular collaborative lesson planning periods for collaboration with language support officers and arrange time for professional exchange activities such as peer lesson observation
  • Make time for the teachers involved to attend workshops/sharing and inter-school networking activities
  • Identify 2-3 teachers who are enthusiastic about implementing curriculum initiatives
  • Make time for the teachers involved to attend the theme-based workshops, inter-school networking activities and face-to-face/online meetings with language support officers
  • Encourage the teachers to share school-based experiences and resources, and network with other like-minded professionals
